How to Build a Gazebo.

Gazebo — By admin on March 2, 2010 at 1:50 am

A gazebo is a stunning addition to any garden, and is a wonderful place for quiet reflection, reading or just chilling out. Some people build their gazebos around their hot tubs or spas. Use it to party or just read a book. Whatever you use it for, your gazebo will quickly become the centerpiece of your garden.

The key to any gazebo construction is precision – good, seasoned wood measured and cut accurately. Any flaws will be obvious in the finished product, and will give the final structure a very crude appearance. It is most important to use detailed blueprints and follow them rigorously.

There are a great many designs to consider, but a popular choice is the traditional octagonal gazebo, which is perhaps the easiest and most rewarding backyard project for either novice or expert woodworker to undertake.

So, how to build a gazebo properly?

A gazebo consists of these basic elements:

* Footings
* Corner posts
* Decking or deck boards
* Rafters and kingpost
* Roof
* Frieze panels
* Railings and balustrades

Construction starts with the concrete footings, laid at the 8 points of the octagon and one at dead center. Each corner footing will have an anchor bolt set into it, and the vertical corner posts will be attached to these.

The rim joists and deck supporting frames are attached to these posts and the centre footing, checking for proper alignment constantly. After that come the decking boards, again carefully cut and fitted to make sure the cut lines are good an straight.

Make and fit the frieze panels between the upper parts of the vertical posts, and then mount the rafters at the precise angle from the post tops to the center kingpost.

Lastly build and mount the railings and balustrades – these and the frieze panels are where you can add your own touch and give the gazebo its unique character.

All of this is simple to write but more complicated to do properly unless you have a clear picture and instructions to guide you. Virtually every part needs some sort of angle or rebate cut into it, and it is very easy to get these confused or back to front.

It is vital to use good, clear plans, instructions and comprehensive materials lists to avoid a disappointing – perhaps disastrous – result.
