Many people have the misconception that Southwest area rugs are all kind of the same. This is not the case at all. In fact, within the general categorization of southwestern area carpets, there can be many different sizes, print styles, color schemes, and materials used to make the piece. Below is a list of the three biggest ways in which this style of area carpet can vary so that you can more easily choose a piece for your home.Southwest Area Rugs

1) Native American design or contemporary. Some Southwest rugs are designed with strong Native American influence as far as color and scheme while others have a more modern print and design to them. The contemporary pieces often blend a mixing of earthy colors that have become synonymous with the Southwestern label, but with very different images than the traditional Native American themed pieces.

2) Animal prints. Pictures or images of animals that live in the Southwestern part of the country are very popular with this style of rug. Snakes, bears, wolves, and horses are among the most commonly used. However, desert scenes with these or other animals as a backdrop are becoming more and more popular.

3) Material and style. Hand woven area rugs are extremely popular in the Southwestern style. While they are more expensive, they often use natural, unprocessed materials that give the carpet a very unique look and feel. Instead of traditional materials like cotton and wool, Southwest rugs can be made of such natural substances as hemp, bamboo, and various tree barks.
